Event Description

The Commoning Festival: Coventry Commons of Social Action
World Day of Social Justice – Friday 20 February 2026

What does it mean to truly share our city?

The Commoning Festival is a flagship gathering marking the World Day of Social Justice, bringing together residents, grassroots groups, and organisers to explore how we can pool resources, skills, and spaces for the common good. Rooted in the principles of commoning; shared stewardship, collective action, and co-governance; the festival invites participants to move beyond passive attendance and actively shape the future of Coventry.

Across the day, expect interactive workshops, makers’ tables, open discussions, communal dining, storytelling, and live media. The event celebrates the grassroots initiatives already building a more equitable city, while also serving as a strategic launchpad for a permanent Coventry Commons of Social Action.

Hosted by Emmanuelle Henry-Cottrell and the Connecting for Good movement within Grapevine Coventry, this gathering responds directly to local challenges around isolation, poverty, and marginalisation. By combining digital tools, financial autonomy experiments, and collective decision-making, the festival shifts from charity to co-governance, empowering communities to take shared ownership of their city.

What To Expect: Programme Highlights

A participatory day of action, learning, and connection

  • Interactive Workshops – Practical sessions focused on social justice and community collaboration

  • Makers’ Tables – Hands-on spaces to create, repair, and map local stories, culture, and nature

  • Speakers’ Square – Storytelling and shared experiences from residents and local initiatives

  • Communal Dining & Music – Shared food and music to strengthen community bonds

  • Reflection & Exploration – Time to engage with themes of inequality, isolation, and shared responsibility

This is a participatory day to learn, make, share, and connect with others passionate about social justice and building a city for everyone.

Any surplus or proceeds from the event will be reinvested into the work of local charity Grapevine Coventry, supporting community-led action across the city.
